Rapid Access Prostate Cancer Diagnostics
Satish had led the collaboration between GM Cancer, The Royal Marsden and UCLH via the NHSE National Vanguard Project. Through his work as chairman of this UK wide group, he has formulated the NHSE Best Timed Pathway for prostate cancer diagnosis. This pathway is now being adopted across England to allow patients more rapid access to more sensitive diagnostic tests for prostate cancer such as multi parametric MRI scans and transperineal prostate biopsies.
The innovative, most sensitive and safest prostate biopsy
Satish was the first to introduce the latest form of prostate biopsy to Greater Manchester. This new technique allows the targeting of abnormal areas within the prostate using a multi parametric MRI scan beforehand and aligning the images with ultrasound guidance. This technique is performed under local anaesthetic through the perineum and so is much more accurate and has much lower complication rates than the standard biopsy techniques offered. Satish has introduced this across GM and currently runs the highest volume service in the GM NHS healthcare system. He has also trained numerous consultant colleagues from other trusts to ensure that the technique is delivered equitably across Greater Manchester.
Renal Cancer Surgical Research Group (National Cancer Research Institute)
Satish has been a member of the Surgical Renal Cancer research group for a number of years and ensured that Manchester patients have access to National and International research trials through his work at Salford Royal NHSFT, The Christie NHSFT and the Urology Pathway Board. He is currently the principal investigator in a NCRI trial examining patients with advanced kidney cancer at Salford Royal.
Specialist Cancer Surgeon
Satish is one of the highest volume kidney caner surgeons in Greater Manchester providing all aspects of renal cancer surgery to patients including laparoscopic (key hole) surgery, open surgery and complex multi organ surgical resections. He also provides tertiary surgical expertise to the largest adrenal surgery service in the North West of England with colleagues from Salford Royal managing complex benign and cancer cases. Satish also works closely with the specialist Intestinal Failure unit surgical team at Salford Royal (one of only 2 specialist commissioned services in the UK) undertaking complex reconstructive abdominal, pelvic and complex fistula surgery for patients from all over the UK and Europe.
Satish is one of only 3 surgeons in Greater Manchester that offers Da Vinci Robotic surgery for renal cancers. This technology allows the preservation of the kidney excising only the cancerous areas. This has revolutionised the management of small renal masses enabling patients to have their treatment and get back home within 2- 3 days of major surgery.
Training , Research & Education
Satish has always been a keen teacher, trainer and educator. He has over 25 research publications and numerous poster and podium presentations at regional, national and international conferences. He also undertook a formal period of research as a registrar based at The Christie hospital in association with the University of Manchester which resulted in a MD thesis at the University. Satish has trained many junior and senior doctors in Urology and mentored surgeons from across the region and Europe in complex diagnostic procedures and therapeutic operations.
Greater Manchester Clinical Lead
Satish has been the clinical lead for urology cancer services since the inception of Greater Manchester Cancer, one of the largest cancer alliances in the UK. He chairs the Urology Pathway Board and with his colleagues from NHS Trusts across GM has led the innovative development of urology cancer services across the conurbation.
